Name: Kathy Crow

Years involved with Iditarod: I actually got started in 1973 in an article that our school had gotten in the little weekly reader, things that they used to have out in the 70s for kids. And it was at school and it had this big deal about the first running of the Iditarod. And I looked at that and thought, I’m going to do that one day.
Iditarod Role: We’re parking the mushers and getting them situated so that they are ready to start the ceremonial start.

What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?:
I first became involved with the Iditarod through the school little flyer that they put out in 1973, which is the first running of the Iditarod. And why? Because it was to save the children of Nome.
What is your Why? Why are you here TODAY and involved with the Iditarod?
I’m here today and involved with the Iditarod because my husband said, “Well, if you’re going to be following it this long, why don’t you come up here and do it?” And I said, “Yeah, okay. Let’s do it.” Been doing it ever since. And so, yeah, long time.
Tell me about your most memorable Iditarod experiences?:
One of my most memorable Iditarod experiences. My most memorable Iditarod experiences was with Lance Mackey before he left us. I got to spend some time with him discussing dogs and things like that, and discussing idiosyncrasies of things that normally are not asked, not the same old questions. And it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed that. And so, both Mackeys are carrying our charms for the last two years.
What in life do you know for sure?:
What I know for sure about life. Everything you need to know about life comes from the animal. If you watch the way they treat life, that’s the way you treat it. And you’ll be happy.
