Question 1: What is it about running sled dogs that you love so much?
So what I love about running sled dogs is it’s so pure. And I feel like there’s not many things in the world you can find such peace. And it’s not only pure, it’s simple, and the friends you’re with, your dog team, they’re so loyal and they are simply there for that moment with you. And I think that’s pretty special and there’s no overthinking in that moment. So your dogs just simplify being out there. They love to be out there and it makes you share the same passion with them.
Question 2: What, who or how and when & why did you first get involved running the Iditarod?
I got involved with running the Iditarod because this actually began as a seasonal job for me when I was 16 and I was a sled dog handler in a summer operation and it was simply only a job. I loved the dogs, but Iditarod was never in my dreams. I’d been around the sport and the Seavey family my whole life. And then after I think seven years of working summer, I turned into the manager of the operation and all of a sudden summer tours weren’t enough and I sort of definitively decided that I wanted to run dogs in the wintertime and switched up my whole life. And Iditarod actually didn’t become a part of my goals until about two years into running dogs in the wintertime, so it sort of just unfolded without it really being a plan.
Question 3: Tell me about just one of your most memorable Iditarod experiences running the Iditarod.
My most memorable experience running the Iditarod is not yet happened, I guess you could say, since I haven’t ran it yet. But my most memorable experience I would say was my decision to run the Iditarod and it had been an opportunity for me. I knew that was coming up a couple years before I signed up, but I wasn’t sure I ever wanted to do it. And I do remember the day that I realized that this was right. So it was just a certain decision and it came down to this is too special. And I couldn’t argue with that in my head, like this opportunity nobody ever gets and it’s too special to say no to. So that’s probably my most memorable memory about running the Iditarod that hasn’t happened yet.
What in life do you know for sure?:
What I know for sure about in life is as of right now, this is perfectly right.
