What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?
I got involved with Iditarod in 2009, a fellow firefighter was out here at the checkpoint in Rohn. I was actually involved working a Willow start years before that. But the fun part out on the trail started in ’09. A close firefighter friend of mine, Lisa, got me involved. This’ll be my 7th year. And if I’m not working, I try and come. And this’ll be four, maybe five years in a row now. So, it’s a lot of fun.
What is your Why?..Why are you here today and involved in Iditarod?
I’m here today and involved with Iditarod because I love dogs and I love being outside in Alaska. Alaska is what America was, for the most part. And I enjoy being outdoors. There’s a lot of different people you get to see year after year, some of them, but you meet a lot of cool and interesting people.
Tell me about just one of your most memorable Iditarod experiences?
One of my most memorable Iditarod experiences … too many to list. I think the one that comes to mind is that there’s so many people out here doing this in some of the extreme temperatures and conditions that we deal with out here and the remoteness of the trails. We’re in a place right now that we don’t even have internet, which some people find that hard to believe. But here we are, we can’t even get our updates on time. So, we’re like, “Oh, no.” It’s always fun coming out here.
What do you know for sure?:
Okay, what I know for sure and life is, I’m going to die and I have to pay taxes. Other than that, that’s a for sure thing.
