What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?

I first got involved in the Iditarod with my parents, Walt and Gail Phillips, when they were involved with the old Iditarod gang.

What was one of your most memorable Iditarod experiences?

One of my most memorable Iditarod experiences was watching the finish from Nome and being asleep in bed and hearing the sirens go. And you slept with your boots and your parka right next to your bed, and you just jumped into your boots and ran. And you didn’t know in those days, these are when I was very young, you didn’t know who was going to win. You didn’t know who was coming into town. And it was just the most romantic, memorable, wonderful experience.

What does the 50th running of the Iditarod mean to you?

Knowing this is the 50th Iditarod makes me feel, well, old because I’m 50 now, but also quite wonderful that something just so iconic to Alaska has lasted this long. And it’s just wonderful.

What do you know for sure?:

What I know for sure in life is that everything is uncertain, but I’m going to have as much fun doing it as I can.
