HUMAN

Name: David and Julie Hidden

Age: 66 (David) and 64 (Julie)

Residence: Henderson, Nevada

Occupation: Retired and living full-time in an RV, so we’re not in Henderson very much

Years involved with Iditarod: This is our first year. Julie got us signed up when we were looking to come up here for the month of February, March to enjoy the weather in Alaska and thought this would be a great opportunity to get involved with stuff. It sounds like fun. We both love dogs.

Iditarod Role: Dog handlers and general help anywhere we can. We signed up for registration. I’m a retired software engineer and got to help out in the lab a little bit. Julie’s a retired nurse, so she can help if somebody needs her in that respect.

Current Location: Lakefront Hotel, Anchorage, AK

Date of Photo: March 3, 2023

Temperature: 15 degrees

What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?

What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?

David: As I said, we were coming up here for the month just to enjoy Alaska in the winter. Julie saw that the Iditarod wanted volunteers. We’ve volunteered in other aspects in the past and thought this would be a fun and wonderful opportunity to get involved with something that’s obviously fun.

Julie: We first became involved with the Iditarod, like David said, this year. To me, it was a way to become involved with local culture. We’re fascinated with Alaska. We like to come here as often as we can and couldn’t think of anything more Alaskan than the Iditarod, so here we are.

What is your Why? Why are you here TODAY and involved with the Iditarod?

Julie: I’m here today and involved with the Iditarod, because I just want to be involved, see what it’s all about. This is our first time.

David: I’m in here because I like to be involved, too, help out where I can and keep busy and active. Outside in Alaska is where I want to be.

Tell me about just one of your most memorable Iditarod experiences:

David: You’re asking us what our most memorable Iditarod experience was, and quite frankly, we don’t know because we haven’t had any Iditarod experiences yet except for being in the Lakefront Hotel, and I think there’s going to be more.

What in life do you know for sure?

David: What I know for sure in life is it’s fun to live, be outside, and stay active and healthy so that we can be as active as we want, and that’s what we do.

Julie: Agreed. Outside, active. We love Alaska. We love the snow. We like to try to give back a little bit, because we’ve had what we call very fortunate lives, and now it’s our time to retire, enjoy life and volunteer for the first time, really, full-time volunteers at just about anything.
