What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?
I first became involved with Iditarod when my friend Amy Miller invited me up after I had retired from teaching. Her brother, Mark Green, had been a long-time volunteer for the Iditarod, and she had traveled up here with him before his passing. So I came up in 2020 with her and came to Kaltag at that time, too.
What is your Why? Why are you here TODAY and involved with the Iditarod?
I’m here today and involved with Iditarod because of the people. I’ve enjoyed the entire experience so much, both in 2020 being here in Kaltag, I worked trail. I worked from home last year with Finger Lake Remote, and I’m here again because of the people, because of Alaska. I love the tenderness that I see between the mushers and their dogs when they come into this checkpoint. It’s really a beautiful thing to see. I’m here because I’m amazed of the athletes, not only the mushers, but the dogs, and this wonderful feat that they complete.
Tell me about just one of your most memorable Iditarod experiences.
One of my most memorable Iditarod experience was in 2020 when there was a musher that was stopped on the ice for a number of hours. The village got together around midnight and went out and picked him and the dogs up with their snowmobiles. It was just quite an experience to be part of that and see that rescue happen.
What in life do you know for sure?
What I know for sure in life is that it’s short. It’s precious. Let the people that you love know that you love them and enjoy every moment.
