Question 1: What is it about running sled dogs that you love so much?
What I love about running sled dogs is being out there on the trail with them, running through the night, seeing the sun rises and the sunsets. And just paying attention to all their movements and getting to know them by their gate. And maybe who they like to be put next to when they’re running. How they like to eat their food. How they bed down on their straw. I love the sounds of running dogs, just hearing their footsteps all in unison. I love when we stop, and how they’re scratching around in their straw, making their beds. I love the sound of the food, hitting the bowls and hearing everybody lap it up and gobble it down and looking at me for more.
And I just love seeing them and being with them every single day from walking in the kennel first thing in the morning to hooking up and running and then going back to their spots and taking care of them, pretty much every aspect of running sled dogs.
Question 2: What, who, how and when & why did you first get involved running the Iditarod?
I got involved running the Iditarod because I became a handler for Dean Osmar back in 2003, and just started helping with training and preparing food drops. And every day was cooking food and chopping meat to be packaged and put in the freezer. And learning all the aspects of making my own gang line. And helping with harnesses and repair and sled repair, and just everything about that I fell in love with. And that’s just started my dreams of maybe running Iditarod sometime in the future.
Question 3: Tell me about just one of your most memorable experiences running the Iditarod.
My most memorable experience running the Iditarod is in 2015 I was fortunate enough to get to run up to the little village of Huslia, and it was the year of extreme cold. And I pulled into Huslia, and I remember Art Church saying, “Hello, welcome to Huslia. It’s 62 below.” And I couldn’t believe it, but the feeling was unreal, and being in Huslia was surreal and it was the highlight of my journey that year.
Question 4: What in life do you know for sure?
What I know for sure in life is that dogs should definitely be part of the journey.
