What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?
I got involved with the Iditarod last year in Takotna. We were teaching there and the entire community participates in hosting the Iditarod as a village. So as part of the community we went out and helped, cooked food and did whatever needed to be done and we continued that here in Nikolai.
What is your Why?..Why are you here today and involved in Iditarod?
I’m here today and involved with Iditarod because I prefer to be behind the scenes and working on events and participating that way, helping out, cleaning, cooking, taking care of people rather than just observing, I guess. I’m here in Alaska at all because when I was a kid I loved the movie Balto and that’s probably why I moved here in the first place. So I guess it’s fitting.
Tell me about just one of your most memorable Iditarod experiences?
One of my most memorable Iditarod experiences was last year in Takotna. I was standing on the trail speaking with someone… I can’t remember; one of the other staff members. And I remember seeing the first songbirds coming back for the first time and we kind of stopped and watched them. I mean, we had ravens and chickadees of course, but there were other birds flying past for the first time. And it was kind of neat. Everybody stopped and thought, “Oh, spring’s coming.” Maybe not this year because it’s so cold still, but last year.
What do you know for sure?:
What I know for sure in life is that you probably should have picked my wife for the face of the Iditarod because she’s much cuter than I am. And that other than that I live here, I don’t know a whole lot. And figuring it out I guess is the more important part. But I can’t say that I know very many things for sure.
