What, who or how and when did you first get involved with the Iditarod?:
I first became involved with the Iditarod in 1974 when I was in high school. And I was in my bedroom. It was back in the old filmstrip days, and my father yelled at me to come see what was on the TV. When I got there, it was just in time. Just in time to see the musher go across some pack ice, sunset in the background. And I said, “Oh my gosh, that’s what I want to do.”
What is your Why? Why are you here TODAY and involved with the Iditarod?
I am here today and involved with Iditarod because I love the dogs, I love the people, I love the excitement, I love the energy, and I love all my friends. I have more friends in Alaska than I do in Georgia.
And also after teaching, I subbed for 10 years. I taught the Iditarod curriculum for probably 20 years, and the students nicknamed me the Sled Dog Lady. And in my town of Dawsonville, I can be out and about and they will yell, “Sled Dog Lady!”
Tell me about your most memorable Iditarod experiences?:
One of my most memorable Iditarod experiences was when I came in 2011, I got to meet Lance Mackey and we became friends. I became friends with his family and he signed all my stuff, Lance Mackey. And underneath his name, he put in parentheses, “Your man.”
What do you know for sure?:
What I know for sure in life is have to have experiences and adventures.
